Ben and Jerry’s gives No Shits
I’m sick and tired of maggie getting credit and being idolized for things april used to be hated for. April has always been “the one everyone hated” and sarah drew had to work realy REALLY hard to get as much screentime as she gets today. She’s been there for more than 150 episodes and she’s STILL sidelined to better suit the needs of your newcoming faves- yes, I’m talking about you, amelia sheperd, eliza minnick, and maggie pierce
Maggie got THREE centric episodes this season. THREE. Everyone thinks it’s soo cute that she can’t do relationships and that she’s awkward and introverted WELL that’s because april kepner has been paving your fucking way the entire time so she gets the rear end of the stick. She’s the uptight virgin; maggie is the delicate flower who’s just too innocent to find love. April’s awkwardness is played for laughs, while Maggie’s is shown as a sign of outwordly superiority.
She and april are really very similar, but april is written as the office bitch (seasons 7-8), the religious nut (season 9), the one who leaves (seasons 11-12), and the treacherous office bitch once again (13). Sarah can do marvels with the scenes she gets.
On the second episode of season 11, we already got a maggie centric episode, narrated by maggie. No one needs to be reminded that on that same season, which was Sarah’s FOURTH as series regular and fifth in total, Sarah got her very first voice-over and centric episode. Look, I love Kelly McCreary, she’s a great actress and that’s also part of the motive why it’s so sad that she’s stuck in this part of an immature, egoist, and unrealistic “genius”.
And for Jackson to be annoyed at April when she does it but find it in him to comfort maggie is the most ridiculous shit my tv has ever presenced.
And I know about how unrealistic this is, because in many ways I am Maggie Pierce. I went to college at sixteen, I’m stupidly awkward around boys and I really just prefer to be alone. That is how I know maggie is being completely glorified and it’s a fucking problem because I used to LOVE maggie pierce. This season ruined her completely, first inserting her in a middle school love triangle and then STRAIGHT OUT BULLYING APRIL KEPNER WHEN SHE SHOULD KNOW BETTER GIVEN THAT SHE’S WRITTEN AS *PERFECT APRIL* and THEN yelling at her mother when she thought she was going to get bigger boobs? SO WHAT???
I hate maggie pierce. I just hate her, and I hate that meredith is stuck in that nucleus in the show because she used to be nice to april and it was great to see their friendship on my screen again- although I know we won’t get it often enough, since maggie has effectively replaced april in all things meredith, personality traits and now jackson. So, yeah, I’m pissed.
Love all of this. ALL of this. Took the words right out of my head. 👏 Nobody remembers how much Sarah was bitched at and insulted for how they wrote April in earlier seasons. Things Maggie is now loved and adored for. I used to love Maggie as well, but it’s hard to love a character when they so clearly show a double standard. Shows how much sway the show has in shaping the viewer’s perspective over a character’s likeability. They write April’s quirks into Maggie and have other characters speak positively about them, in turn making the viewers like Maggie. A privilege that was NEVER extended to April / Sarah. I have a lot of respect for Kelly, but I swear Sarah did wonders with her acting and actually getting viewers to gradually fall for a character that was so clearly meant to be unliked. I just wish they wrote Maggie the way they wrote her her first season on the show. Her own person and not some copy of another character.
